Waiting for the Next Wave
2020
Gouache with some watercolor
8" x 8"

These works were created in December 2020. Both are seascapes inspired by daily beach walks. My focus in thought and imagery are on the constant force of the water against the rocks. I think of them in the broader sense of issues we face in our contemporary struggles against powerful forces. My deep muted painting " Waiting for the Next Wave" is intended to have a heaviness in physically of the rocks and be somber in emotion. In the faint distance is the next wave we must endure. Politics, Covid19, injustice, global warming take your pick they are all the next wave.

Determination Against Power
2020
Gouache with some watercolor
8" x 8"

The other painting in this series is " Determination Against Power". The drama of the large waves about to overtake the rocks. The paintings close-up view is intended to inform the viewer of the qualities of both the waves and the intensity of their relationship. The massive power of the sea with unyielding repeat waves like the marches for Black Lives Matter pushing against old structures. I take close account of the changes and details to the rocks and jetties. These paintings gave me the opportunity to express those observations as well.
